Free Your Voice and Body Stories Training Sept 2024-June 2025:

I am so excited to announce my 10-month transformational training program Sept 2024-June 2025 to help you heal and express, play and find joy in community. It will center QTBIPOC, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA! folks.

This training is half singing/sounding practices and half somatic expressive arts practices to help you release and rewrite your body’s stories. Our bodies hold both our trauma and our resilience and wisdom. By going deep into them, we can hold and heal our experiences and rewrite new narratives. What new truths want to be spoken, sounded and sung into the world? What do you want to birth in 10 months? What will you metamorphose into? This course will help you help you sing, speak, and live from a fully embodied place.

Do you want to

  • Discover and give voice to various parts and stories living inside you?
  • Sing from your whole body, not just your throat?
  • Uncover stories of different body parts/chakras and rewrite your narratives?
  • Explore gender, sexuality, ancestry, and other themes and decolonize our bodies and minds?
  • Co-create beautiful improvisational music?
  • Give and receive sound healings?
  • Release chronic muscular tension and holding patterns in the body through trauma release tremoring?
  • Restructure the body through breath?
  • Create a performance ritual/ritual performance to help release what no longer serves you and birth you into the next chapter of your life?
  • Play, play, play?

I will share creative tools (voice work, movement, drawing, writing, theater, and improvisational singing and performance) that have helped me on my own healing journey. Some influences are:

  • Fitzmaurice Voicework to destructure and restructure the body
  • Sharing Your Life Story from Page to Stage with Ann Randolph
  • Drama therapy and Autobiographical Therapeutic Performance with Armand Volkas
  • Tamalpa Institute–Body Part Mythology
  • Vocal Improvisation with Rhiannon
  • Circle singing with Bobby McFerrin
  • Mindfulness and loving kindness practices for the body

This training is recommended if you have already taken a 10-week class with me and want to go deeper or if you have some experience with voice work, expressive arts, somatic practices, and improvisational performance. You will benefit from this course if one or some of the following apply:

  • You like spaces where you can be vulnerable and authentic
  • You like spaces where you can be brave
  • You want deep healing through embodiment
  • You like groups and the potential for deep healing: acknowledging impact, calling people in
  • You like drama therapy
  • You love to play and improvise in community
  • You crave connection with others
  • You are a singer or performer and want to come from an authentic, internal foundation
  • You are a facilitator, healer, therapist, or change agent and want to fill your own well and come away with more tools for your own clients

We will start from the root (perineum, legs, feet) and go up the body and energy centers to arrive at the crown/top of the head. Each month we will focus on a different body part/chakra and its stories and how to sing from that part of our body and give voice to its songs.

Classes will be held in Berkeley on approximately the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month from 630-930pm at Green Yogi Telegraph near Ashby and 1 Sunday a month from 10am to 5pm at Cal Shakes in Orinda (retreat like setting in nature with lots of outdoor spaces to play). See the detailed schedule below:

September: Introduction to the Body/Process Monday Sept 16 and 30, 2024

June: Integration Mon June 2; Mon June 9.

People come out of this program with a deep love/acceptance for their bodies, identities, and selves; a strong sense of community, friendship, and belonging; freeing their voices; peace and self love; healing of internal splits; more joy; empowerment; inspired creativity; and more.

The cost is $3950 for 120 hours over 10 months ($395/month). This includes a one hour private session (value $160) with me to get support around whatever is arising in the program or to get help around your performance ritual/ritual performance. You must attend 90% of the sessions (you can miss 3 classes or 12 hours) in order to graduate and receive a certificate of completion of Free Your Voice & Body Stories Level 1. Think of this group as part play/singing/music/joy and part drama therapy/healing the body through storytelling. This is a process-oriented group and a no-judgment zone, and you will become a more confident singer/musician as well as embodied performer/storyteller. Throughout it we create a strong love field of belonging and connection. If the idea of short solos and a longer 15 minute performance ritual at the end of 10 months absolutely terrifies you, I offer 10 week shorter courses (that you can take many times) that will prepare you for this deep dive.

You are making a commitment to yourself and to the group for an intensive training program that will help you transform your psychological material and free your voice and life. This work is transformative and requires a deep commitment to showing up for yourself and for the group. As a result you will be more deeply embodied and be able to hold more parts of yourself and others.

Payment plans are available. Limited sliding scale and scholarships and work trade available for folks in financial need. To apply for the program, please fill out this application. Admissions are on a rolling basis. This courses prioritizes QTBIPOC, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ folks.

What Free Your Voice Participants Say

Phoenix masterfully weaves music, improvisation, and storytelling in creating a safe space to explore, release, and grow. Free Your Voice and the Drumming class brought more joy, love, friendship, confidence, and magic into my life than I could have imagined. The greatest lesson was learning how to create such spaces for myself and others.

This is now the 5th time I’ve taken Phoenix’s Free Your Voice Class. It’s my favorite part of the week. Over the last year, I’ve become a more joyful, free, and playful person. I show up more fully in my life. This class really does FREE YOUR VOICE. I am speaking up more in the rest of my life. Phoenix is a truly gifted and perceptive guide and teacher. Take this class!

Love Phoenix and their classes!! It is so fun and freeing and will open up your voice in ways you never imagined. It was the best thing I did for myself earlier this year, and it helped me through a very poignant point in my life and career. I also took their djembe and singing class this year! Loved this class too! I made good friends in both classes whom I still keep in touch with.

Phoenix’s Free Your Voice While Drumming class was outstanding! After every class, I left amazed at what I had accomplished in less than 2 hours. They break down rhythm in a way that makes it incredibly tangible for a total beginner to percussion. And then they teach you to integrate your voice while drumming. An awesome teacher and I would strongly recommend it!
