Free Your Voice

Sing, sound & speak your truth with confidence. From the sacred to the silly, open in ways you've never imagined through sound meditations, singing, chanting, expressive arts, vocal improvisation, and community building exercises. Free your voice and free your life! All levels.

FREE YOUR VOICE!!! Sing, sound, and speak your truth with more confidence and freedom!

The voice is the primary means of communication in human beings. Our voice is an expression of who we are and how we feel. In the tones of a person’s voice you can hear the subtle music of feeling and thought. By transforming and enhancing the way we sound, we transform and enhance the way we perceive our self, and this influences the way others perceive us. By extending the breadth, depth, strength, flexibility and fluidity of the vocal range, you can draw out the full imaginative spectrum of the psyche in sound.

Since 2011, I have helped free thousands of people’s voices and drums through my eclectic Free Your Voice private and group classes. Private sessions and 10-week group courses consist of half sounding practices including sound meditations, expressive arts, drama, improv, play, and community building exercises and half singing practices from around the world. From the sacred to the silly, open in ways you’ve never imagined and make long-lasting shifts in your life. Highly transformational!

I believe everyone can sing. Before words, we expressed our emotions through our songs which consisted of sounds such as cooing, babbling, gibberish, crying, laughing, etc. I enjoy acting as a singing partner who can sing with you, share your load, harmonize, reverberate and echo your feelings.

These modules can be taken as stand alone courses and are also designed as series that can be taken over the course of 1-2 years. For the vast majority of people, I recommend Initiation as the flagship course and good introduction to my eclectic program. For those who want to continue on the pure voice track, Harmonize and Chakra Tuning are highly recommended. For those interested in learning to drum and sing at the same time, Trance Drum and Rhythm Weave are recommended, with 2 series in each course.

“Where I come from, we say that rhythm is the soul of life because the whole universe revolves around rhythm, and when we get out of rhythm, that’s when we get into trouble. For this reason the drum, next to the human voice, is our most important instrument. It is special.”–Babatunde Olunji, Nigerian djembe master.

I love helping people drum and sing at the same time. Full body bliss, and a total brain workout!

You learn rhythms (2/4, 4/4, and 6/8) from the Middle East and West Africa and different songs and how to sing and drum at the same time. I teach a Middle Eastern style of trance drumming where you learn a basic rhythm (open) and how to fill it (closed). This class gives you a great foundation in drumming and how to accompany yourself vocally. We also explore West African polyrhythms and sing freedom songs in 3 part harmony in the oral tradition. FREE YOUR VOICE PRIVATE SESSIONS

As a vocal coach, I am here to help you with the technical and emotional aspects of what’s happening with your voice. I have found that both are necessary to free your voice and express your soul. A lot of what holds people back vocally is psychological, so I bring my experiences in expressive arts and drama therapy, somatic practices and mindfulness in addition to technical training to help you sing, sound and speak your truth with confidence.

For people who prefer a more traditional approach, we will: 1. Tune your instrument (scales, warmups, being on pitch, extending the range). 2. Play your instrument (sing songs, work on phrasing, dynamics, vibrato, etc.) 3. Express your soul’s song (connect in with your intention/emotional connection as you sing). We can play with harmonies, song coaching, preparing for performances, and creating your own songs.

For those who want a more therapeutic approach which might include expressive arts and drama therapy, I use a combination of methods that might include creative movement, somatic practices, and sounding to help you transform emotionally and somatically. The voice reveals your mood and how you feel about yourself and how the world perceives you. I offer different sounding techniques to help you release emotions and express through words, sounds and song what you need to let go of and to move forward with more ease in the world.

For speaking purposes, we can explore your voice tone and range, and address issues of nasality, raspiness, huskiness, hoarseness, breathiness, throat tension, losing your voice, and more. I can help you work on presentations and speeches.

I am honored to work with my trans and non-binary communities to help explore our voices in a loving, supportive environment

I also love to work with yogis to teach mantra, devotional chants, and how to sing and play harmonium. This nada yoga (sound yoga) helps you focus, get clear, feel calm, and connect to the divine.

We can see what you’re looking for and what methods/modalities resonate with you in each individualized session. For example, sessions could include a guided sound/movement meditation, scale warmup, learning a song, doing expressive arts around a theme you’re exploring in your life, and improvisational sounding. I look forward to being a guide and playmate on your transformative voice journey!

Sessions are $120/hour in Albany, $150/hour if I come to you in SF. Buy 6 sessions and save $50. I have a few sliding scale spots.

TESTIMONIALS

“Amber is not only a kind and patient person, but they teach with the expert grace of a seasoned therapist and musician combined.”–Michael F

“Amber leads you through a supportive, fun, creative process that will not only improve your singing but also will change your life.”–Alison H

“Amber has helped me work through blocks to get to a point where I feel confident and excited to sing and use my voice in general. I particularly love how versatile individual sessions were; some sessions we focused on learning classical vocal techniques and others were more like voice therapy, using creative exercises to get out of the head and allow the voice to flow more freely. This has helped me outside of class and beyond singing as well…speaking in public, negotiating at work, relating to new and old friends…all of these areas of my life have been enhanced.”–Racheli W

“Amber Field’s Free Your Voice Workshop was absolutely astounding. They are incredibly skilled at quietly creating a safe space and gently encouraging people to explore and find their truth, then openly express it. So many times at the end of the class people would voice their delight at being given the space to “play” which, as adults with busy lives, we rarely have. Whether you are a professional singer or have never sung a note in your life you will benefit from this workshop. Sign up NOW!!! You won’t regret it. “–Colleen Browne, group student

“Amber is a superb teacher. Their classes are both structured and fluid; the container is always safe. They have a broad range of skills, talents and knowledge that they bring to their teaching. This means that each session — individual or group — is exciting, so we can push our edge but also familiar, so we can stay grounded. I enthusiastically endorse Amber.”–Kaethe W, private and group student

“Amber’s class is one of my favorite things I’ve done for myself as an adult. Throughout the ten-week Free Your Voice course, I learned how to be more honest, creative and vulnerable. But mostly it was just *so* much fun.”--Hanna J., group student

“This has helped me outside of class and beyond singing as well…speaking in public, negotiating at work, relating to new and old friends”–Racheli W., private and group student

“Amber held a beautiful, safe, no judgement space for everyone to grow, learn, heal, sing, play, laugh & even cry”–Valerie C, group student

“In ten weeks I feel like I got ten years worth of talk therapy and musical training combined.”–Michael F, group student

“They break down rhythm in a way that makes it incredibly tangible for a total beginner to percussion. And then they teach you to integrate your voice while drumming! An awesome teacher.” –Jai Singh, Free Your Voice 1, 2 and drumming student

“Amber’s class – Free Your Voice while Drumming – was outstanding. Amber is a superb teacher who makes learning drum polyrhythms accessible and fun. Our class became tight after just a few classes together, and we found ourselves doing things we didn’t think possible (and we’re not all musicians or singers – this is due to the way Amber sets up the songs and rhythms with varying levels of challenge, and always encourages us with heart and a smile). It’s more than just the rhythms, the forming of a meaningful group in a short time – it’s really a magical experience that has liberated new possibilities in my music and my being.” Lisa F, Free Your Voice while Drumming student
“I recommend this class! Amber created a supportive space for learning, stretching, listening, and curiosity. I haven’t grown up with much variety in rhythms and it’s fun to realize there is more to life than a 4×4 rhythm ;). I appreciate how you’re able to create a community while at the same time encourage the individual within it.”–Lucy A., Free Your Voice while Drumming student.

“I really enjoyed Chakra Tuning! Thank you, thank you, thank you for creating such an amazing class and for bringing your full self. One of my highlights was the heart chakra session when 4 of us sang in the middle of the circle. Singing with those three other women was such a beautiful experience! I think it is the first time I’ve really felt like I was creating beautiful music! I also appreciated how really vulnerable you were – it really pushes all of us, which I think is fantastic.”–Leslie M, 2017 participant

“I just completed the “Chakra Tuning” course (I previously took “Free your Voice”) and can not say enough good things about it. It is hard to describe, but the course is playful, fun, deep, beautiful, full of growth… It challenged me in unexpected but wonderful ways. The music we created together as a group was beautiful.”–2017 participant
